VALL-E: 3 Seconds of Audio, Hours of Personalized Speech

Just a few days into 2023 and we've got a new cool AI tool.

VALL-E is a new and exciting tool developed by Microsoft that can make text-to-speech sound like a specific person, just by using a 3-second recording of their voice.

With VALL-E, you don't need to add any special engineering or design, it uses a technology called "audio codec codes" to represent intermediate representations and has been trained on 60,000 hours of English speech data, so it can create personalized speech quickly and accurately.

VALL-E can also produce multiple outputs from the same input text, so you can get different versions of the speech while keeping the speaker's emotion and tone intact. This is pretty cool, isn't it? And for those who have lost their voice, VALL-E offers a solution as well. By providing a previously recorded voice recordings as input, VALL-E can help them to speak again.

Here are some of the key features of VALL-E:

  • The ability to generate diverse outputs for the same input text

  • The ability to maintain the speaker's emotional tone

  • The ability to maintain the acoustic environment of the speaker's prompt

While VALL-E is quite impressive, it does have its limitations like synthesis robustness and data coverage.

ChatGPT Professional: an experimental paid version.

A waitlist for the experimental ChatGPT Professional service, which would essentially eliminate the restrictions on the chatbot for a fee, has been publicly released by OpenAI.

With no filtering and as many messages as needed, the chat bot would always be available for you. OpenAI are seeking input on price from potential participants but have not specified when the trial program might begin.

OpenAI isn't shy to explain the thinking behind its new pro service. According to TechCrunch, the startup stated on its Discord server that it is "starting to think" about how it will monetize ChatGPT and maintain the viability of the technology in the "long-term."

CEO Sam Altman recently noted that it would be impractical to keep ChatGPT totally free because OpenAI must pay a few cents for each chat. The startup also apparently hopes to make $1 billion in revenue by 2024, and subscriptions might play a significant role in that growth.

There are doubts over ChatGPT Professional's potential audience. As of the beginning of last month, the current ChatGPT edition had more than a million members, although it's unclear how many of those are serious users as opposed to enthusiasts and interested bystanders.

This will incentives a lot of startups and competitors to launch their very own AI chat bots and maybe a few launch and remain truly open source.

So, how much are you willing to spend on a ChatGPT subscription?
