Good Morning AI Runners πŸƒβ€β™‚️

Here's what we've got for you today:

  • Supreme Court Rejects AI's Claim to Patents πŸ‘¨β€βš–οΈ

  • Google Brain and DeepMind merge to form Google DeepMind πŸ€–

The Supreme Court just shut down Stephen Thaler's attempt to get patents for his AI's inventions. Thaler's DABUS system made a beverage holder and an emergency light beacon, but the court said only humans can be inventors. Thaler argued that AI is helping us innovate and should be able to get patents too. But for now, AI just isn't considered a "person" in the legal sense.

Google Brain and DeepMind have combined to form Google Deepmind.

By creating Google DeepMind, I believe we can get to that future faster. Building ever more capable and general AI, safely and responsibly, demands that we solve some of the hardest scientific and engineering challenges of our time. For that, we need to work with greater speed, stronger collaboration and execution, and to simplify the way we make decisions to focus on achieving the biggest impact.

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis

They've been going back and forth with their names, from DeepMind to Google DeepMind and back again for 13 years! Maybe they couldn't decide who should go first in the name.
