OpenAI's Altman: Don't Believe the GPT-4 Hype

Are you anxiously waiting for the release of GPT-4?

No? Then just pretend you are because we have an update and you signed up to this newsletter so you’re stuck with us for a few minutes today 🤷 Anyway, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, you might want to temper your expectations.

During an interview with StrictlyVC, Altman was asked about the highly anticipated release of GPT-4 and if it would be coming out in the first quarter or half of the year. His response? "It'll come out at some point, when we are confident we can do it safely and responsibly."

But that's not all, Altman also shut down rumors about the model's capabilities, specifically in regards to the number of parameters, a metric that corresponds to an AI system's complexity and capabilities. He called one viral and factually incorrect chart comparing GPT-3's 175 billion parameters to GPT-4's 100 trillion, "complete bullshit." Altman went on to say, "The GPT-4 rumor mill is a ridiculous thing. I don't know where it all comes from. People are begging to be disappointed and they will be."

If you have been literally sleeping under a rock 🪨 you would have still come across the chart he’s talking about. It took twitter by storm last week and no matter how many times we replied to viral tweets and threads to debunk the rumor? People just didn’t care and spread the chart everywhere.

But don't let this dampen your spirits too much.

GPT-4 will still be sufficiently better than the current GPT-3.5.

Maybe it could come with video generation abilities? Although when Altman was asked about when OpenAI will build an AI model capable of generating video, he said, "It will come. I wouldn't want to make a confident prediction about when...It could be pretty soon; it could take a while."

It’s all just a guessing game for us right now and we’ll see what 2023 will bring us.

Microsoft's AI Game Plan: Azure OpenAI

Are you ready to give your business a boost with AI? Microsoft has got you covered with their brand new Azure OpenAI service. This reads like an ad….

Anyways back to the news

This service has been in testing for over a year and now, businesses and developers can get their hands on AI models like GPT-3.5, Codex, and DALL-E and integrate them into their own cloud apps. This basically means, you'll be able to use GPT-3.5 for support tickets, content matching and even improving search results in online stores.

But that's not all, Microsoft is already using the Azure OpenAI service to power GitHub Copilot, a $10 per month service that helps suggest lines of code to developers, and Power BI also uses GPT-3 natural language models to generate formulae and expressions. And the upcoming Microsoft Designer app uses DALL-E 2 to generate art from text prompts.

The launch of Azure OpenAI also comes just days after rumors of Microsoft looking to integrate ChatGPT and other OpenAI language AI models even further into its products and services. Microsoft is rumored to be preparing to challenge Google with ChatGPT integration into Bing search results, and the company is reportedly looking at integrating some language AI technology into its Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook apps.

Imagine we all switched to bing? That would be really funny and the biggest plot twist in tech.

It's also no secret that Microsoft has a deep relationship with OpenAI, they purchased an exclusive license to the underlying technology behind GPT-3 in 2020 and invested $1 billion into OpenAI in 2019. They are now reportedly eyeing a $10 billion bet on OpenAI that would see the software giant get 75 percent of profits and a 49 stake in OpenAI (reportedly).

Rewind.ai straight from black mirror, funded by a16z

A new AI tool, Rewind.ai, is attempting to make everything that ever crossed your screen, searchable.

Rewind.ai raised 10M pre-launch at a 75M valuation from a16Z. (Say what now?)

Ohh to become a founder back by a16z….

Step #1 build waitlist product

Step #2 secure funding from a16z

Step #3 create buzz on twitter

Step #4 hype fizzles out and no one ever mentions your name but you make for a great viral thread on twitter analyzing / explaining your downfall

But let’s not judge them too fast! It has some rough edges but it’s interesting to watch how users and the general public will react.

They rolled out their beta back in November and the waitlist exceeded 300k before Rewind.ai became generally available in January of this year.
