Inflection AI, a startup founded by former DeepMind leaders that raised $225 million, has launched Pi, a new chatbot designed to be a more conversational personal assistant. Unlike other chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Pi is designed to converse colloquially and remember previous conversations to get to know its user better over time. The company claims Pi is a new class of AI that works for individuals by actively listening and helping them talk through questions or problems. The market is already saturated with similar chatbots, but Inflection AI might carve out a spot in the AI race with Pi.
Dr. Paul Christiano, who used to work at OpenAI on their safety team, helped create RLHF that's responsible for making ChatGPT sound so human-like. In a recent interview about AI alignment, he dropped some pretty wild quotes. Apparently, the most likely way we could all bite the dust isn't from a Terminator-style AI uprising, but rather from the fact that we've deployed AI systems all over the place. If, for some reason, all those systems decided to turn on us, we'd be toast for sure. He also said that there's a 10-20% chance of an AI takeover resulting in most humans dying, and a 50% chance of total doom once AI systems reach human-level intelligence.
