I just finished reading this interesting article on AGI. To be completely honest with you, I had no clue who Carmack was before I read this Q&A. But, the part that really caught my attention was how he got started in AI. Apparently, he asked a friend to recommend him 40 critical research papers on the topic of AI, read them all, and got a really good understanding of the field before he started his own work in the field. Curious what those 40 papers were. But, even if I can't get my hands on that exact list, I think it's still a really great idea to pick your own 40 papers and dive into them. You'll definitely come away with a better understanding of the concepts and be ahead of a lot of people and research.
