Elon Musk: Big year for AI

What's coming for AI in 2023?

  • OpenAI's GPT-4 is coming.

  • AnthropicAI's 'Claude' is coming.

  • DeepMind's 'Sparrow' is coming.

  • Text-to-Video is coming.

  • StabilityAI is cooking.

  • Google is Code Red.

  • Blake Lemoine was right.

I was scrolling through Twitter, minding my own business, when I stumbled upon a list of AI advancements/projections that caught the attention of Elon Musk and got him to reply with "Big year for AI" and it got me thinking, we've talked about all these topics in the past 35 issues of our newsletter, but seeing them all listed out like this has me both excited and on the edge of my seat for what's to come in 2023 alone.

This list probably makes for 5% of what's coming in AI this year too.

Microsoft and OpenAI Announce "extended partnership"

Microsoft has announced that they're extending their long-term partnership with OpenAI through a new "multiyear, multibillion dollar investment."

Now, we know what you're thinking, "Wait a minute, didn't we just hear rumors about Microsoft investing $10 billion into OpenAI a few weeks ago?" And you're right, we did! But they are probably calling it an "extended partnership" instead of a "massive investment round" to keep the focus on building and advancing AI research.

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, said in a statement, “We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform.” This new partnership will give developers and organizations across industries access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications.

As part of the deal, Microsoft will be increasing its investments in the development and deployment of supercomputing systems to assist OpenAI's research. They will also be the exclusive cloud partner for OpenAI, and Microsoft's cloud services will power all OpenAI workloads across products, API services, and research.

Microsoft is also planning to deploy OpenAI's models across a variety of consumer and enterprise products. They're rumored to be preparing to challenge Google with ChatGPT integration into Bing search results, and they're reportedly looking at integrating some language AI technology into its Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook apps.

As for the financials, Microsoft isn't disclosing the exact amount they've invested in OpenAI, but they have been looking to use this close relationship to further commercialize its Azure OpenAI service. OpenAI says it remains a capped-profit company after this deal, allowing it to continue to raise capital with checks and balances in place.
