ClipDrop becomes Stability AI's first acquisition

Plus: Microsoft's supercomputer is the ultimate AI flex

Good Morning AI Runners 🏃‍♂️

Here's what we've got for you today:

  • OpenChatKit: The Open-Source Alternative to ChatGPT

  • ClipDrop becomes Stability AI's first acquisition

  • Microsoft's supercomputer is the ultimate AI flex

OpenChatKit, is the first open-source alternative to ChatGPT. A group of talented folks from Together, who used to work at OpenAI, have made a 20B chat-GPT model, which they've honed specifically for chatting.

Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion, announced last week that it has acquired Init ML, makers of an imaging tool called ClipDrop. Demo of ClipDrop ⬇️

If you have ever wondered about the hardware that's powering ChatGPT, we did some digging and found out a few things:

  • Microsoft spent hundreds of millions of dollars to create a supercomputer that powers OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, and they did not skimp on the hardware.

  • Microsoft linked tens of thousands of Nvidia A100 chips and reworked server racks to build the supercomputer.

  • The infrastructure is also used by Microsoft's own Bing AI bot.

  • According to Scott Guthrie, Microsoft's vice president of AI and cloud, the project cost "several hundreds of millions of dollars."
