10 Million Daily Active Users in 40 Days 🧨

Good Morning AI Runners 🏃‍♂️

Here's what we've got for you today:

  • Coding Assistance by OpenAI

  • ChatGPT: 10 Million Daily Active Users

Coding Assistance by OpenAI

OpenAI is hiring hundreds of developers from around the world to help make ChatGPT an even better coding companion.

The company is searching for computer programmers to create training data that includes both lines of code and explanations written in natural language. OpenAI already has a ChatGPT model, Codex, which can translate natural language into code and is used by Microsoft to power GitHub Copilot.

Recent research has shown that adding ChatGPT's ability to have a dialogue with humans to coding assistance can significantly improve it. That's why OpenAI is investing in this area by hiring more contractors. Stack Overflow, a Q&A site for programmers, has even banned ChatGPT-generated answers due to their potential to be plausible, even if low-quality.

Yann LeCun, chief AI scientist for Meta, believes that a truly advanced coding assistant needs to be capable of anticipating the effect of its actions and have a mental model of how the world will change as a result. LeCun compares coding assistants like Copilot to cruise control in a car - "Your hands need to remain on the wheel at all times" because they can generate errors in code without any awareness.

"The question is how do we get from systems that generate code that sometimes runs but sometimes doesn't," says LeCun. "And the answer is that all of these systems today are not capable of planning; they are completely reactive."

ChatGPT: 10 Million Daily Active Users

ChatGPT reached 10 million daily active users in just 40 days since launch. This breaks the record of Instagram, which took around 355 days to reach 10 million registered users. And that's not all - Chief Futurist at ARK Venture Investment, Brett Winton, tweets that the number of unique daily users suggest 20+ million users every month. Whoa!

But what makes ChatGPT so popular? Well, its ability to understand and create a human-like language from various natural language inputs gathered from a large text database. And with its applications in machine learning, natural language processing, and data analysis, it's no surprise that ChatGPT has become an indispensable tool for many. People use it for the simplest tasks like writing a tweet or thread to using it as co author on research papers.

Some may say the novelty of ChatGPT will wear down quickly, but Brett isn't so sure. He says, "I would be less optimistic if ChatGPT were used only for novelty purposes."

Funny how we think ChatGPT is just a drop in a bucket of whats to come. We will look back at this one day and laugh at all the mess a simple chatbot had caused.

That's it from RunTheAI for today.
